John Stapleton has opened up on having a “difficult” Christmas after the death of wife Lynn Faulds Wood earlier in the year.

The broadcaster and campaigner died at the age of 72 in April from a stroke. Stapleton, 74, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to discuss how he coped following the bereavement as he spent his first Christmas in 49 years without her.

"It was a difficult time obviously, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to it but it was a period that Lynn absolutely loved," he told hosts Sean Fletcher and Charlotte Hawkins.

"She wasn’t particularly religious but she loved Christmas and we had a great Christmas Day every year. There would be 10, 12 guests sometimes around the table, Lynn doing the cooking, she was a brilliant cook."

He added: "This year was clearly very, very different indeed. Like thousands of other people we had someone missing at the dinner table."

At the time of her death, Faulds Wood had been living with the autoimmune disease Antiphospholipid Syndrome which led to the stroke.

She had previously survived bowel cancer and had campaigned for greater awareness around the illness, founding the charity Beating Bowel Cancer in 1997, then Lynn’s Bowel Cancer Campaign in 2003, and helped to set up the European Cancer Patient Coalition and MEPs Against Cancer.

Stapleton reflected on his wife of 43 year's legacy on GMB, as he said: "Lynn helped put bowel cancer on the map.

"It might seem a daft thing to say that but bowel cancer 30-odd years ago was very much the Cinderella of the National Health Service, there was very little attention paid to it."
