Joint venture

An agreement between two companies to join together on a particular project to pool resources and expertise, and share risk and costs. Sometimes the joint venture creates a separate company, limited liability company or partnership which is usually disbanded at the end of the contract. Mining and oil exploration companies often set up joint ventures to drill in particular areas to help lower the cost of expensive projects.
