Yahoo Finance Jonjo Shelvey to have operation to repair a hernia problem
Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will have an operation on Monday to repair a hernia problem that ruled him out of the 1-1 draw at Molineux.
Shelvey was injured last weekend during the defeat to Manchester United and will now be ruled out until at least the end of next month, Steve Bruce revealed.
“It's a sportsman's hernia so we think he might be available after the international break,” said Bruce. “He hurt himself putting a free-kick into the box last week and it looks like he'll be operated on at 2pm in London.”
Without Shelvey and Isaac Hayden only fit for the bench, Bruce put together a patched-up team that earned a point through Jacob Murphy’s late free-kick cancelling out Raul Jimenez’s opener.
Murphy’s future looked uncertain over the summer but Bruce insisted he never considered loaning out the winger following his spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season.
“He's found it difficult to work his way into the team,” Bruce said. “But the loan did him the world of good and him leaving was something I never contemplated.
“He looked like he matured and wanted to be a Newcastle player. I thought he could offer us a threat at the other end.
“I saw him practice some free-kicks on Thursday and thought ‘can he replicate it?’ He's played well in the cup, he's trained every day like it's his last. He wanted to get into the 25-man squad and his development is there for everyone to see. I'm delighted for all of the work that he did.”
Wolves manager Nuno Esirito Santo feels his team need to find different ways to defeat teams who want to defend at Molineux.
“We need to find solutions for every moment of the game, when we don't have space and when we do,” he said. “We will try to find better solutions. We had a lot of shots but the good thing is that we created space and movements. Let’s try to deliver in the final moment and make the goalkeeper work.”
