Jose Mourinho has sent a clear message to Dele Alli by saying the “door is always open” for a return as he praised Tottenham star Tanguy Ndombele after his stunning goal against Sheffield United.

Ndombele restored Spurs' two-goal lead with an outrageous lob with the outside of his boot from a tight angle at Bramall Lane, another step in his Spurs transformation.

The Frenchman’s Tottenham future looked uncertain last season when he was often criticised by Mourinho.

But Ndombele looks a different player this season and England midfielder Alli, who was left out of the squad at Sheffield United, is now the one on the fringes.

Ahead of the Shffield United game, Mourinho branded Alli an "unhappy that believes that it’s not his job to fight and to work every minute for the squad and for the club."

When asked about Ndombele's revival following the win on Sunday, Mourinho laid out a clear message for any player who would want to make a similar comeback, if they want to make the effort.

"As I always say when a player doesn't perform I always feel he is guilty of it and when a player performs I always feel he is responsible for that," Mourinho told Sky Sports.

"I just feel he is a great example of [the fact that] with me, the door is always open. Even a difficult period last season the door is always open for when a player wants to come in the direction of the team. The team is on the other side of that door. If the player wants to walk through that door then it is always open. He felt that and is having a good season with some great performances like today.

"He is playing 90 minutes now, managing his mental and physical condition to last 90 minutes. Amazing quality of course but I believe now that mentality, that physical condition and managing to be a fantastic player because he can be a fantastic player."
