Yahoo Finance Jurgen Klinsmann in hot water over possibly expired coaching license
One of the most well-known soccer coaches in the world has to prove he can still be a coach.
Jurgen Klinsmann is in hot water with the German Football Association (or DFB, short for Deutscher Fußball-Bund) over his inability to produce an up-to-date coaching license and could face a fine. The timing is even more unfortunate considering his Hertha Berlin team is facing seven-time reigning Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich this weekend.
Klinsmann, 55, did have the proper license in 2000, but it’s unclear whether he kept up with the necessary classes and certifications to ensure the license was still valid. When asked to produce his license, Klinsmann informed the DFB that he left it in the United States, where he lives and coached the national team from 2011-2016. Klinsmann said he was in the process of having the paperwork sent to him.
A former star player, Klinsmann has plenty of experience coaching in his native Germany. He was the head coach of the German national team from 2004 to 2006, and he also had a brief stint as Bayern Munich manager. After serving as a consultant for the Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC, Klinsmann was named the coach of the USMNT.
In November of 2019, Klinsmann returned to the Bundesliga, joining Hertha Berlin. Both Klinsmann and Hertha could face a fine if Klinsmann’s license is no longer up to date. Klinsmann will then have to take the necessary steps to get re-certified to coach in the league.
That might be silly for one of the most recognizable coaches in the sport, but rules are rules.
