5-year-old hurt in crash involving ex-Chiefs coach Britt Reid awake from coma

The 5-year-old girl who was hospitalized with brain injuries after a car accident involving former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid woke up from her coma on Monday, her aunt announced.

Ariel Young was hospitalized and in critical condition with bleeding and swelling in her brain earlier this month, and remained unconscious for more than a week. Her aunt shared on a GoFundMe page set up to help with medical bills that Young was awake.

Kansas City police said in a tweet Tuesday afternoon that Young was still unresponsive but able to breathe on her own.

Ariel’s 4-year-old cousin, Julianna, reportedly suffered a concussion and broken nose in the crash too.

Reid, the team’s former outside linebackers coach and son of head coach Andy Reid, admitted to police that he had "two or three" drinks along with his prescription Adderall before he drove his truck and crashed into two cars stopped on the side of a Missouri highway earlier this month.

Reid did not attend the Super Bowl with the Chiefs, and also suffered injuries in the crash that required surgery. He is no longer with the team, and is under investigation. He has not been charged.
