Kate Garraway has told how she hasn’t been able to see her husband Derek Draper since Christmas, and fears it isn’t good for him amid his COVID battle.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband has been in hospital since March last year after contracting the coronavirus.

Garraway and the couple’s daughter Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 11 did get to spend time with Draper over the festive season, but speaking on GMB this week the TV star shared that they hadn’t been together since then.

She said she worried that only seeing staff in masks and not people he knew was not “helpful” for Draper’s recovery.

Asked by co-host Ben Shephard how Draper was doing, Garraway said: “Well, I haven't been able to see him, Ben.

“I haven't seen him since Christmas, which of course means he's back into a situation where he's looking at strangers in masks.

“And you know, I think that's the situation for everybody, they've got somebody in the hospital at the moment, it's not unique to him. It's tough. It's also the same for people in care homes.

“And when you're someone like him that is dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can't help but fear that it's not helpful."

When Shephard asked if she meant that seeing people he knew could possibly be beneficial to Draper, Garraway agreed: “I feel like it is.”

She said the fact there was “no end in sight” to the current situation was also tough.

Last month she said her husband’s recovery was “incredibly uncertain”, saying he was “ravaged” by the virus.

Garraway is now writing a book called The Power Of Hope about Draper’s fight and the impact on their family, in a bid to help others who have suffered during the pandemic.

She and Draper have been married since 2005.
