It’s been 10 months since Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper was admitted to hospital after contracting coronavirus.

Now, the TV presenter, 53, has opened up about the kind words of support Prince William and Kate Middleton gave her when they met at the Pride Of Britain Awards in November.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping magazine, the Good Morning Britain host – who is mother to 14-year-old daughter Darcey and 11-year-old son Billy – said:It's wonderful that they even know who I am and what I've been through.

“They were so sweet to me and showed their compassion to Darcey and Billy. Because they imagined what it would be like for their own children."

She added: "And Prince William knows exactly how hard it is to be without a parent and how it can affect you, so he shared his thoughts on that."

Garraway said the Duke of Cambridge told her: "You are doing amazingly though. If it wasn't for social distancing we would both give you a hug.”

Her husband, also 53, was hospitalised in March before being placed into a medically-induced coma. He remains seriously ill due to complications caused by COVID-19.

Speaking about her heartbreaking plight on Good Morning Britain this week, fellow host Piers Morgan said: “We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek is still in a coma from COVID.

“He may never come out of that coma. She's been told this, and it's heartbreaking.

"It has hit right here on our show... It's hit a lot of people now. One hundred thousand people or more have now lost their lives – think about how many family members they all have.

“Multiply that and you're getting into millions of people directly affected by COVID-19.

Last week, Garraway herself admitted on the programme that she had been feeling "low" since Christmas.

She said her other half is “still ravaged by the effects of COVID", but that she is constantly "talking to doctors about what we can do for him".

Garraway recently announced that she is writing a book called The Power of Hope about her family’s pandemic experience, which is due for release in April.

The star said: “By telling the story of Derek's illness and how it has altered our lives, I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering.”

She met the former political adviser in 2004 through a mutual friend, before marrying a year later.
