Kate Garraway has thanked the “wonderful people” who helped her to make Christmas work as her husband remains in hospital amid his coronavirus battle.

The Good Morning Britain presenter previously told how she felt “physically sick” at the thought of spending the festive season without hubby Derek Draper, who has been in hospital since March after contracting COVID.

She has now shared that the run-up to Christmas was “calamitous” because her home flooded, internet issues left her and her children without TV and Wi-Fi and she struggled to get a food delivery.

However, plenty of people came to her aid, including former Big Brother host Emma Willis.

Garraway said on Instagram: “Well here we are folks - #newyearseve - the last day of a year few will be sorry to see the back of.

“Have been quiet for a while - getting through Christmas has been a challenge hasn’t it with all the emotions it stirs in our strange world & nowhere really to put them - except in hope.

“And there is still so much real hope out there.

“Not just in the extraordinary health care workers & researchers who definitely hold a bright light for the future. But in all the little kindnesses.”

Kate Garraway is planning to visit her husband in hospital - where staff are switching on Good Morning Britain in the hope of stimulating a response. Derek Draper was admitted to hospital three months ago and although doctors are no longer keeping the 52-year-old in a coma, Garraway has said that "he sort of can't wake-up". The TV host returned to work on Monday after taking time off while Draper has been in intensive care.

The TV star – who shares daughter Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 11, with Draper – continued: “We had a calamitous few days in the run up to Christmas – but we got through thanks to some wonderful people.

“The guys from @bondconstruction who literally got on their hands & knees with me to bucket out water after we had 2 pipe leaks that flooded our home.

“@emmawillisofficial & @marksandspencer who made sure we had #gorgeousfood for our Christmas dinner when I couldn’t get a delivery slot anywhere & the guys from @britishgas who spent hours on the phone helping me to get a fridge & freezer to put the food in.

“The guys from @skyhelp who talked me through getting our WiFi & tv working on Xmas eve. Your kindness & spirit is overwhelming.

“And all @itv & @global for their constant support.”
