On Saturday (17th April) the royal family paid their respects to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, at his funeral. The Duke died "peacefully" on 9th April at 99-years-old.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the guestlist for the funeral was scaled down to just thirty, including the late Duke's children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, as well as their grandchildren, including Prince's William and Harry (who returned to the UK from California for the funeral without his wife Meghan Markle).

Members of the family, including Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince William and Harry, walked behind the hearse, a specially modified landrover, as it made its way from the quadrangle at Windsor Castle down to the Horseshoe cloister outside St. George's Chapel.

The Queen was driven to the entrance of the chapel where she was met by various waiting family members, including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, alongside their husbands.

And though the Duchess of Cambridge did not take part in the procession itself, she did pay tribute to Prince Philip with her choice of jewellery. Wearing pearls is a part of mourning jewellery tradition, and Kate Middleton joined Zara Tindall and Countess Mountbatten in wearing the special accessory.

It's known that both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoyed a close relationship with Philip throughout his life, and Kate opted to wear a set of pearl earrings and a pearl choker necklace, both of which are reported to be on a long-term loan to her from the Queen, as a special way for Kate to show her loyalty the newly widowed monarch.

The Japanese Pearl choker necklace is also a sweet nod to a happier occasion for Her Majesty and Philip, as it was worn by the Duchess of Cambridge during a celebration dinner for the Queen and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary.
