Keira Knightley has said she will not perform nude scenes in films that are directed by a man.

The 35-year-old star of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice said she did not have a “total ban” for acting nude scenes but would no longer consider being naked in front of a male director.

Speaking to the Chanel Connects podcast, the actress said: "I don't have an absolute ban [on filming nude scenes], but I kind of do with men.

"It's partly vanity and also it's the male gaze," the Pirates of the Caribbean actress added.

Knightley, who has been married to musician James Righton since 2013, has previously confirmed she had a “no nudity” clause added to her film contracts since becoming a mother in 2015.

Nudity on set has been debated in recent years, particularly since the MeToo movement gathered pace in 2017 following allegations of sexual misconduct against film producer Harvey Weinstein.

Many studios now hire experts - known as “intimacy coordinators” - to oversee sex scenes and to make sure actors feel comfortable during sex or naked scenes.

Knightley, who last years starred in Misbehaviour about the women’s liberation movement in 70s London, said she could understand why certain films included nude scenes.

The actress said: "I don't want it to be those horrible sex scenes where you're all greased up and everybody is grunting. I'm not interested in doing that.

"Saying that, there's times where I go, 'Yeah, I completely see where this sex would be really good in this film and you basically just need somebody to look hot', so therefore you can use somebody else.

"Because I'm too vain, and the body has had two children now, and I'd just rather not stand in front of a group of men naked."

The actress has revealed in the past she has banned her daughter from watching Disney movies which portrayed women in ways she disagreed with.
