Keira Knightly has spoken of the “complexity of being a woman in the modern age” saying modelling or prostitution are the only careers where females can make more money than male counterparts.

The star was discussing her recent film Misbehaviour, which is about the women’s liberation movement members who protested during the 1970 Miss World beauty pageant, when she made the comments.

During an interview with Stellar magazine recently she was asked how she related to the protesters in the movie.

Knightly responded: “I read the script and I naturally totally agreed with the second-wave feminists [protesting] and yet I've made most of my money as a model.

“I go on red carpets where you're given marks out of 10 and you have cameras up and down your body. I think that's the complexity of being a woman in the modern age.

“Still the number one career in the world - the only one - where a woman can earn more than a man is modelling. Or prostitution. And that says everything it needs to say to young women.

“The way you look is more important than what you have to say or what you think. And that’s the world we still live in today.”

Knightly is open about the pressures of being a woman in an industry which focuses heavily on appearances.

In an interview with The Financial Times earlier this year she told how she has a say in picking her body double when a character she plays in a movie has a nudity scene.

She shared: “I get to choose the body double. It is an interesting selection process! It kind of goes like, ‘that's a little bit like you, but better. She has a lovely body, so she can do this’... then I get final approval of what the edit is.”
