A key Line Of Duty character will return in the next episode

If you feel like Line Of Duty couldn't be any more addictive, or take over your life any more (same, can't remember the last time I went to bed without trying to solve the mystery of H tbh), then get ready for this absolute shocker. SPOILER INCOMING, AVERT THY EYES NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW: a major fan favourite character is set to return in the next episode. Any guesses? No?

We'll put you out of your misery – it's the iconic no-nonsense Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael, played by BAFA award-winning actress Anna Maxwell Martin (who you may also recognise from Motherland, And Then There Were None and Bleak House). Carmichael's return will feature in this Sunday's episode, which is set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm... and you already know it's going to be good.

Viewers will no doubt remember DCS Carmichael from series five, where she was brought on board as an independent investigator from AC-3, after Superintendent Ted Hastings' integrity was called into question. Given that Ted's early retirement is now very much looming (seriously, can that man ever catch a break?), it looks as though Pat is more than ready to step in and take control. Gulp.

Naturally, the question on everybody's lips now is does Pat's reappearance, combined with the reshuffling of the anti-corruption units, mean the end of AC-12... for good? Say it isn't so!

Speaking about her return to the show, Anna Maxwell Martin said, "Pat’s back, I can’t remember what she’s doing there, nor would I be allowed to blab, but suffice to say she’s got some new clobber and she’s ready to bust some balls." Stunning.

Think you can handle some more Line of Duty-related confusion? Some rather tricksy and interesting fan theories have been playing on our minds of late, ranging from the possibility that Kate Fleming is H (I know! Squeaky clean Kate!) to the idea that DI Matthew 'Dot' Cottan might even still be alive.

It's all too much! We're going for a lie down.

Line of Duty airs on Sunday nights at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Series 1-5 and Series 6 so far are available on BBC iPlayer.
