Kim Kardashian West really knows how to pick her moments — and I love it

Kim Kardashian West has done it again. She's sent the meme factory into overdrive.

As millions around the world face the perils of unemployment and extreme poverty in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and as anxiety levels soar, people feel trapped, lonely, depressed, in true Kim K style, the billionaire former reality TV star chose to throw a party on a private island for her "inner circle" to celebrate her 40th birthday, then plaster it all over social media.

Dressed in a gold cut-out Wonderwoman-esque dress, she posted a collage of photos to Twitter and Instagram of her surrounded by glammed up family members and friends, and an ugly three-tiered cake.

She didn't appreciate the "simple luxury" of travel before now, apparently. "Before COVID, I don’t think any of us truly appreciated what a simple luxury it was to be able to travel and be together with family and friends in a safe environment," she wrote.

After the hassle of pre-travel isolation and presumably costly Coronavirus tests, things started to feel briefly "normal" again.

"After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time," she continued.

She even took the time to list the roll call of activities she'd enjoyed, before hastily checking her privilege.

"We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more. I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is. #thisis40."

Naturally, many a meme was born.

It's nothing new for the billionaire to parade her wealth.

In the summer she was dragged for posting about a ridiculously OTT cowboy-themed birthday party for her seven-year-old daughter. And she certainly isn't the first celebrity to be lambasted for tone-deaf social media posts amidst the pandemic. Remember Gal Galdot's apparently earnestly intended cover of John Legend's Imagine featuring a weird line up Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, and Amy Adams, to boost everyone's morale at the start of lockdown? It was instead deemed "cringey" and "out-of-touch."

Unsurprisingly, Kim's latest post has ruffled Piers Morgan's feathers, who didn't mince his words, calling the thread "so repulsive it makes me want to vomit."

A little vulgar it may be but isn't that the whole reason you follow her anyway? For flamboyancy and eye-rolling decadence?

Did it also offer a tiny distraction to your commute this drab Wednesday morning? If you're really honest, weren't you just a little bit intrigued as to what she was wearing, who was there, and yes, exactly what their daily itinerary looked like?

Distasteful, yes. Ridiculous, absolutely. But I, for one, was grateful for some light relief in these seriously gloomy times, if only for the meme factor.

Thank you, Kim, for this morning's distasteful distraction.
