One day before singing the national anthem at Joe Biden’s inauguration, Lady Gaga posed for a sombre photo at the US Capitol.

Dressed in a white cape and matching mask, Gaga posted a photo of herself on Twitter with a caption praying for “peace for all Americans”.

“I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans,” she wrote. “A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance, not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol.”

Fans responded with support, writing that the singer looked “angelic”.

“POV: When you enter heaven,” one wrote.

Others told the “Rain On Me” singer to be safe and wished her well on her performance.

Fans also dubbed her “Pope Gaga The First”, referencing her outfit’s similarity to the Catholic leader's traditional white cassock.

Gaga will join Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks in performing at the swearing-in ceremony of Inauguration Day, which is due to starts around 11.30am ET on Wednesday, 20 January.

Also joining the ceremony will be career firefighter Andrea Hall, who will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance; Amanda Gorman, the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate, who will recite a poem; Father Leo O’Donovan, who will deliver an invocation, Reverend Dr Silvester Beaman, who will give a benediction.
