Lidl named cheapest UK supermarket

Lidl has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket beating six other major retailers, including Aldi and the traditional "Big Four" supermarkets.

The discount retailer came in as the number one supermarket for bargains in the Grocer’s "Super Grocer 33" index, for the third time in a row.

The Grocer price comparison survey found the average cost of everyday grocery items at Lidl came to £46.58, which was £15.44 cheaper than Morrisons.

The index, which compares the price of 33 everyday grocery items across the UK’s seven major supermarkets, found Lidl to be £27.88 cheaper than the most expensive retailer, Waitrose.

Ryan McDonnell, CEO at Lidl GB, said: “Our belief has always been that no one should have to pay a premium for good food and we have an unwavering commitment to provide our customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices.

"Whether it is fresh produce, staple shopping list items or a must-have product from the Middle of Lidl, customers can be sure that they are getting the best value when they shop with us.”

The Grocer compared prices of items on shopping lists, from fresh produce such as milk and grapes, to deodorant, and branded items including Cadbury Fruit & Nut chocolate and Hovis bread.

Lidl was found to offer the lowest price for 27 products including asparagus tips, feta cheese, honeydew melon and tomato purée.

However, in October, Aldi was found to be the cheapest supermarket in the UK, according to a study by consumer group Which?

An average household basket full of groceries and other essentials came in at £75.79, with the same basket costing shoppers £77.68 at Lidl.

Which? found the same grocery basket would cost £86.21 at Tesco (TSCO.L), £86.36 at Sainsbury’s (SBRY.L), £92.72 at Morrisons and £93.99 at Ocado (OCDO.L).

Waitrose was again found to be the most expensive supermarket, with a basket of 48 items coming to £101.17, making it £25.38 more expensive compared to Aldi.
