Lidl expansion: The 237 London areas the discount retailer is eyeing up for potential store openings

Lidl has revealed a long site shopping list as the retailer pursues plans to open a further 140 stores in the UK by the end of 2023.

In a sign of hope for the high street, the German discounter confirmed it will hit its annual target of opening 50 new stores in 2021, creating 2,000 jobs, and released a list of 237 London areas it is considering for potential new store openings.

Sources said the capital remains a key area of focus. The retailer said it is targeting town centre, edge of centre, retail park and metropolitan locations such as Balham, Lewisham High Street and Walthamstow.

The chain is also considering openings in well-heeled neighbourhoods from Knightsbridge to Soho, Chelsea and High Street Kensington, as bosses eye a wider footprint and take on British retailers.

Lidl currently has 860 UK supermarkets, and is planning to invest £1.3 billion into the expansion by the end of financial year 2022 - while rival Aldi has also pledged over £1 billion towards UK growth.

Lidl called on freeholders in any of the London areas listed below to come forward with potential spaces - and pledged that all new stores it launches will come equipped with solar panels and electric vehicle charging points.

The discounter said it is seeking prominent sites that are easily accessible and have a strong pedestrian or traffic flow, and that it will consider mixed-use sites.

Lidl GB CEO, Christian Härtnagel, said: “We are calling on developers and landlords up and down the country to help find potential sites for us to build Lidl stores, which demonstrates the continued ambition we have to further expand our store portfolio across the nation."
