Yahoo Finance Line of Duty's Vicky McClure reacts to that episode 5 cliffhanger
*Spoilers for Line of Duty episode 5 ahead *
Line of Duty weren't exaggerating when they teased "tragic events" unfolding in episode 5 - as viewers watched Vicky McClure's DI Kate Fleming in a fraught stand-off with Gregory Piper's Ryan Pilkington.
DCI Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) had been instructed by the mystery OCG boss to "get rid" of Kate, as Kate has now switched allegiances from the murder investigation team back to AC-12, arranging the unit's undercover surveillance of Ryan.
Davidson had arranged to meet Kate at a remote car-park, before surprising her with an armed Ryan in tow. Luckily, Kate had also armed herself with a gun, which she managed to produce and aim at Ryan, as he aimed at his illegally workshopped weapon at her.
As both screamed at one another to drop their gun, two gun shots could be heard as the screen went to black and the credits began to roll.
Was Kate shot? Or did she shoot Ryan? Or was Davidson caught in the crossfire?
Joining former Line of Duty star Craig Parkinson (aka The Caddy) on the latest episode of the Obsessed With… Line of Duty podcast, McClure said that everything creator Jed Mercurio writes "is always there to serve the story".
"I've been saying week in and week out that I’ve been so worried about certain characters – that we have grown to love over the years – and I’m terrified that one of the main trio is going to go, " Parkinson revealed.
“I have put my chips on poor old Steve, up until this week… And as we know as actors, nobody is safe. When you started reading the script, how did you feel, how did Vicky feel when you were turning the page?"
"Well listen, every episode of Line of Duty history is terrifying and Jed (Mercurio) is always there to serve the story – it is exactly what happened with Dot," the actress replied.
"Dot's time came when it was right to serve the story and that is what Jed will always do. I don’t want to put everything out there but Jed serves the story…"
Viewers will have to wait until next Sunday to discover Kate's fate.
Line of Duty continues on BBC One on Sunday night at 9pm.
