Liverpool tipped as big favourites to sign Chelsea star as heartbroken Boehly comes to major realisation
Liverpool are reportedly leading the chase to sign a Chelsea star, with a disappointed Todd Boehly seemingly accepting a parting of ways is inevitable for the Blues this summer.
The Blues have invested well over £500m on new players since Boehly’s takeover last summer, with 17 new faces arriving at SW6. And that total is already set to become 18 with a first signing of the summer in Christopher Nkunku already agreed.
As a result, the focus on Chelsea will now turn to the reduction of their bloated playing squad. To that end, Ben Jacobs recently told TEAMtalk about five players will likely be on their way as part of a five-man summer clearout.
And it seems that one of those, in Mason Mount, will be the first out of the door.
The England midfielder has been in talks with the Blues over a new deal for the best part of a year. However, reaching an agreement on that deal, which is due to expire in summer 2024, has been far from easy.
Mount currently earns £80,000 a week but reportedly wants a payrise worth around £240,000 a week. That would see him earn parity with his close friend and fellow Cobham graduate, Reece James.
However, Chelsea’s offer to Mount is for some distance less and the two parties remain at loggerheads over an agreement. Reports have indicated that unless an agreement is reached before the summer, Mount could be on his way.
Now, it’s reported that a fresh and final round of talks with Mount will take place over the coming weeks. And the talks are seen as make-or-break for both the player and the club.

Liverpool tipped to sign Mason Mount
Per reports, Chelsea, though, will not go much further towards Mount’s demands.
And while he will be treated with respect due to the length of his association with the club, there is a growing acceptance from a disappointed Boehly that finding common ground will be tough to reach.
As a result, the Blues chairman and co-owner is seemingly likely to signal the heartbreaking decision that Mount can depart Stamford Bridge.
To that end, a number of clubs have been closely following his situation. And the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the sides reportedly considering approaches.
However, the Daily Mail claimed recently that the race for Mount’s services is being led by Jurgen Klopp. The Reds are desperate to bring in new midfielders this summer and Mount is very much on their wanted list. And with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain among those leaving, a move for Mount would certainly tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool.
Now the Merseysiders’ prospects of signing Mount have been talked up by another source.
And talkSPORT’s transfer correspondent, Alex Crook, claims the Reds are strong favourites to win the transfer race.
Mount talks with Chelsea at a standstill
He told the radio station (20/03/2023 at 9.40am): “I think Liverpool [will sign Mount]. Obviously Jude Bellingham has been their top target for a while.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Jude Bellingham actually ends up signing a new contract at Borussia Dortmund with a release clause.”
Turning his attention back towards Mount, Crook added: “Contract talks have been at a standstill for some time. And I think Liverpool is his most likely destination.”
Mount has recently taken on a new advisor to help with his Chelsea negotiations. And Neil Fewings will also help Mount potentially find a new club if their demands are not met.
Liverpool are determined to rebuild their midfield this summer and have several names on their radar. Reports on Monday linked Klopp with two Wolves stars in a double £80m splash.
