Liverpool welcome two key stars back to training but midfielder suffers injury
Liverpool fans can rejoice over the fact that both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz were seen in training today.
Both players were the subject of an injury scare during the 3-1 win over Bournemouth, with Alexander-Arnold seen limping at the final whistle. Whilst Diaz came off after what looked a muscle injury.
Despite their issues, the duo were confirmed in training today by Paul Gorst, but he also revealed that midfielder Curtis Jones is struggling with an ankle injury and was not present.
Diaz scored an incredible acrobatic goal against Bournemouth that boased a certain ‘South-American’ flair as he made it two goals in two games. Luckily, Liverpool possess options on the left wing, as Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and even Darwin Nunez are capable of playing off that side.
However it’s clear that Diaz is the first-choice in that role.
In terms of Jones, he played 24 minutes off the bench against Chelsea in their opening Premier League game but he failed to make the squad for the home victory over the weekend.
The 22-year-old will certainly be frustrated given that he had been a key player during Liverpool’s run-in at the end of last season. He started in their last 11 games and scored against Tottenham and Leicester (x2) and he showed clear improvements in the advanced midfield role.
This summer, Liverpool brought in both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai who play in and around his position.
It also comes at a time when Mac Allister is staring down the barrel of a three-game ban following his red card at the weekend.
The decision was controversial and has been appealed by the club, but it’s unclear if they will be able to turn overturn the decision.
It makes the signing of Wataru Endo look even more important now as Liverpool are set to be without that duo for their trip to Newcastle this week.
