Lloyds (LLOY.L) has announced it will shut 60 branches, including Lloyds, Bank of Scotland and Halifax sites, across the UK, due to customers switching to online banking.

The UK's biggest domestic bank said it would cut branches across its various retail brands, including 24 Lloyds branches, 19 Bank of Scotland and 17 Halifax branches.

"Just like many other high street businesses, fewer customers are choosing to visit our branches," said Vim Maru, group retail director at Lloyds.

Employee union Unite criticised the move, arguing it would "rip the heart out of local communities" and claimed it would result in 124 job losses, although the bank has not said how many workers will be impacted.

Lloyds stressed it aims to offer a new role to all staff affected.

The UK's largest high street bank reported pre-tax profits of £6.9bn ($9.1bn), an increase from the £1.2bn achieved in 2020. However, fraud compensation hurt profits, the bank said.
