Longines' Latest Watch Is From the Sixties. And the Bronze Age. And the Deep Green Sea
EXCLUSIVE: Too many trends can spoil the watch. That much is true. You want a skeleton dial to pump up a muted dress piece, but you don't want it to play 'Greensleeves' on the hour every hour. Such things are Too Much. But sometimes – sometimes – a manufacture can make good on many different things, and in the case of Longines, a long-standing focus on the classic has made a great of many different things.
Introducing to you: the Longines Legend Diver. Based on an archival piece from the Sixties, 2020's iteration has gone for the enduring dial colour du jour – forest green, as seen with the Oris Hangang Limited Edition, and on the Longines Hydroquest too – within a bronze case. It's not a usual choice in watchmaking. But, last year, the appetite for bronze watches soared. They're solid. And where stainless steel and other precious metals usually keep their shine, bronze grows old gracefully, developing a unique patina over the years thanks to a stable oxidised layer.
A dive watch that's a bit Sixties that's green, and made out of an atypical material. A lot going on, then (in a good way). But there has been one subtraction. After feedback on the previous Legend Diver, Longines, forever keen to listen to its really large and vocal and passionate fanbase, removed the date window. The result is an even cleaner, uncluttered dial that is as classic and straight-forward as it gets. The Legend Diver doesn't exactly tick off the boxes for a top table dress watch, but it will sit happily with most things: your best black suit included.
So, it seems you can't have too much of a good thing – or at least that's the case with Longines.
Available from early December at longines.com, priced £2,440
