A Look At Capital & Counties Properties' (LON:CAPC) Share Price Returns

We think intelligent long term investing is the way to go. But no-one is immune from buying too high. For example the Capital & Counties Properties PLC (LON:CAPC) share price dropped 68% over five years. That is extremely sub-optimal, to say the least. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 34% over the last twelve months. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 20% in the last three months.

Capital & Counties Properties wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last five years Capital & Counties Properties saw its revenue shrink by 8.1% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. With neither profit nor revenue growth, the loss of 20% per year doesn't really surprise us. The chance of imminent investor enthusiasm for this stock seems slimmer than Louise Brooks. Not that many investors like to invest in companies that are losing money and not growing revenue.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 11% in the twelve months, Capital & Counties Properties shareholders did even worse, losing 33% (even including dividends) . However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 20% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
