A Look At Reading International's (NASDAQ:RDI) Share Price Returns

It is a pleasure to report that the Reading International, Inc. (NASDAQ:RDI) is up 84% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 59% in the last three years. So it is really good to see an improvement. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Reading International saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 39% in the last year, Reading International shareholders lost 1.4%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 7% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Reading International has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is concerning) we think you should know about.
