LSL Property Services' (LON:LSL) investors will be pleased with their respectable 55% return over the last three years

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But many of us dare to dream of bigger returns, and build a portfolio ourselves. For example, LSL Property Services plc (LON:LSL) shareholders have seen the share price rise 49% over three years, well in excess of the market decline (11%, not including dividends).

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. LSL Property Services was able to grow its EPS at 66% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is higher than the 14% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat. We'd venture the lowish P/E ratio of 7.44 also reflects the negative sentiment around the stock.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return.
