MAC Cosmetics tries to reassure angry customers who accused the company of repackaging old eyeshadow palettes: '[This] lacks creativity'

On Jan. 4, MAC Cosmetics released a new eyeshadow palette that the company advertised as being inspired by the Sims video game series.

The $32 beauty product was promoted on MAC’s Instagram as a way for customers to re-create “all the looks you love in the game.”

But makeup fans were less than enthused by the palette, some even expressed concern that it was an old, repackaged palette with a fresh new box.

Hell hath no fury like a beauty lover.

“Literally what about this is Sims themed?” someone commented on the Instagram post.

“It lacks creativity like the Sims 4 sequel,” another person joked in response.

The palette is made up of neutrals that MAC fans pointed out looked awfully similar to another palette that the brand released in 2017. The Solar Glow Times Nine palette was part of MAC’s anniversary collection and, as one Twitter user pointed out, the names of the colors on that palette are the same as those on the Sims palette.

“Wait I HAD this palette forever ago,” someone said in reply. “I knew it looked too familiar.”

Typically when MAC does a partnership with a celebrity or another brand, the packaging, colors and shade names all fit into the theme. For this Sims-themed launch, however, the company missed the opportunity to run with the game’s signature green or blue for eyeshadow colors, and the actual palette isn’t blue itself — just the external cardboard box.

Less than a week after the launch, MAC addressed the backlash in a statement to Nylon.

“Given the broad, diverse community of Sims fans, we wanted the shades and textures in the collection to appeal to everyone — whether they are makeup beginners or artistry gurus.

“Therefore, we went back to the vaults and picked a universal fan-favorite palette with some of our best-selling shades that easily allows you to go from natural to glam in one swipe.

“This versatile, special deco collector’s item is just one aspect of the SIMS x M·A·C collaboration for fans to create a fun, interactive experience. Other trend-driven, bold looks come into play when our fans and artists bring other M·A·C products into the mix to create exciting expressions of SIMS beauty.”

Unfortunately, the message didn’t do much to smooth things over with angry customers.

These cheap beauty dupes look just like the real thing!
