MakeMyTrip (NASDAQ:MMYT) shareholder returns have been favorable, earning 76% in 1 year

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the MakeMyTrip Limited (NASDAQ:MMYT) share price is 76% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 27% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 25% higher than it was three years ago.

Since it's been a strong week for MakeMyTrip shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

MakeMyTrip wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last year MakeMyTrip saw its revenue shrink by 50%. The stock is up 76% in that time, a fine performance given the revenue drop. To us that means that there isn't a lot of correlation between the past revenue performance and the share price, but a closer look at analyst forecasts and the bottom line may well explain a lot.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that MakeMyTrip shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 76% over one year. That's better than the annualised return of 2% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
