Makeup By Mario Has Arrived — Here’s What Everything Looks Like On

·5-min read

If you flick through the archives of the Kardashian-Jenners' most iconic beauty looks, you'll notice that there's only one man behind them: makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic. Boasting a killer contour, flawless skin and '90s-inspired nude lips, his 'soft glam' signature is unmistakable, not to mention world-famous.

As his celebrity clientele grew, suddenly everyone wanted to do makeup like Mario — whether you were a makeup artist or a beauty obsessive. Today he's one of the makeup industry's biggest (and nicest!) legends so when he announced the launch of his namesake beauty brand — Makeup by Mario — it was met with incredible hype.

Almost a year since beauty lovers in the US got their hands on the products, Makeup by Mario is finally available in the UK at Cult Beauty. So what can you expect? There are three Instagram-worthy eyeshadow palettes in various finishes (from matte to metallic) with shades to suit all skin tones, like burnt copper, petal pink and a handful of natural nudes inspired by human skin. And it wouldn't be a collection without a matte liquid liner and a selection of pearlescent highlighters.

I've been a Mario super-fan since day one so I couldn't wait to get my hands on everything. But what's worth your money? I tried over £200 worth of products and here's my honest verdict.

Brushes don't pick up the pigment but I took Mario's advice and used my finger to apply the copper tone to my lids, following with the yellow gold in the corner for a multidimensional look. Eyeshadow fills me with fear (I'm more of a feline flick person) but it took me about a minute to achieve this sunset-inspired eye. The pigment is so easy to control and it blended like a dream. Throughout the day, it didn't slip, slide or crease. It's great if you prefer natural makeup but it didn't make my skin gleam like I wanted it to. It's a tad sticky and a little on the small side for £19. That said, it didn't budge the whole day nor did it disrupt my foundation base. The collection does feature a powder highlighter, the Master Crystal Reflector, £19. This is my new favourite liquid eyeliner. Mario's signature look is an understated wing but I love to go all out and I had to show you how pigmented and matte this is. The felt-tip nib is soft but sturdy and makes easy work of fashioning a feline flick, whatever the size. The best part is that it didn't fade to grey over the course of the day like some liquid liners tend to do. Stockpile it for summer because it won't budge.

Makeup By Mario Master Mattes Liquid Liner, $, available at Cult Beauty

It's soft but not crumbly and the very fine, flat brush on the other end makes it quick and easy to create a smoky wing. With mattes reigning supreme, metallics feel somewhat outdated to me but the pictures on Mario's Instagram persuaded me to give it a go. Again, brushes don't pick up the pigment (unless wet) so Mario suggests using your finger instead. This worked a treat and I blanketed my lids in the pretty pink colour. I expected something very lurid at first swipe but it lent my lids an understated sheen and the eyeshadow can be layered up for a deeper colour. Just like the metal palette, there was no dusty fallout so I didn't have to tidy up or redo my foundation. Personally, this isn't a palette I'd use every day but for festivals and nights out, it's perfect.

The blush and lipstick I'm wearing here aren't Makeup by Mario, nor are they available at Cult Beauty just yet, but you can shop many more MbM products direct from his website: www.makeupbymario.com.

Makeup By Mario Master Metallics Eyeshadow Palette, $, available at Cult Beauty
