Man Dies After Drowning in Lake Outside SoFi Stadium: 'He Went Underwater and Did Not Resurface'

The 19-year-old has not been identified at this time, according to the Inglewood Police Department

  • It's the second drowning fatality after a man went into the six-acre artificial lake in 2022

A 19-year-old man died Friday night after he drowned in a lake outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, police said.

Security officers observed him entering the lake Friday just before 9:30 p.m. local time, the Inglewood Police Department said in a release obtained by PEOPLE.

"Law enforcement officers assigned to work the event taking place at the stadium also saw the man swimming in the lake," police added. "As he continued to swim, he went underwater and did not resurface."

A comprehensive search and rescue operation was then initiated to find the missing man.

"The coordinated efforts included divers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, a lifeguard dive team from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, helicopter support and drone technology," the department said.

The man's body was recovered from the lake shortly before 11 p.m., police said. His identity is being withheld at this time.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of an individual last evening,” SoFi Stadium said in a statement, per the Los Angeles Times. “Our deepest condolences go out to the individual’s family and friends for their loss. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

The victim's death came days before a powerful atmospheric river-fueled storm began pummeling Southern California. As of Monday morning, over 500,000 people across the state have been left without power and there has been at least one death reported, per CNN.

Deadline noted that the Friday night drowning is the second to take place since 2022.
