SINGAPORE — In an attempt to rekindle his relationship with his ex-fiancee, a man raped her with the intention of impregnating the then-21-year-old.

The man, who is now 22, was sentenced to eight years’ jail and six strokes of the cane on Monday (22 February) after he pleaded guilty to one count of rape, with one count of trespassing into her house on 15 June 2019 taken into consideration for his sentencing.

Both the man and the victim, who is now 23, cannot be named to protect the latter’s identity.

The two were previously engaged to be married on 2 February 2019 after dating for less than two years. However, the relationship turned sour and the victim broke off the engagement in May 2019. She rebuffed the man’s attempts to get back together with her. This did not prevent the man from harassing her.

Left main door, gate unlocked

On 15 June 2019, the victim was alone at home and feeling ill. She had been in contact the man for him to collect his belongings. As it was the weekend, her parents were in Johor Bahru, as was their usual habit.

When the victim went to buy groceries at 6pm, the man unexpectedly approached her at the void deck and insisted on accompanying her.

The two got into an argument and the woman returned to her flat after telling the man not to follow her home. She left the main door and front gate unlocked.

At around 9pm, after an argument with the man on WhatsApp, she heard the main door opening and the man suddenly entered her bedroom. He had not asked for permission to visit her or told her he was coming.

The man told the woman that he wanted to get back together with her. Even after the woman rebuffed his attempt, he told her that he was going to impregnate her so that she would be obliged to rekindle their relationship.

He then grabbed her right arm, threw her on the bed, and raped the struggling woman. After the act, the woman went to the toilet to wash up while crying.

“The accused followed her and helped her to wash up. He told her not to cry, and that if she became pregnant, he would help her abort the baby,” said the prosecution. The man then left the flat.

The woman, who was fearful that she would get pregnant, cried throughout the night and sent a message to the man, saying she wanted to commit suicide, together with a video of her holding a knife between her thighs and pointed towards her groin.

The next day, the victim confided in a friend that she had been raped by the man and might be pregnant. She said she felt like dying. She lodged a police report at her friend’s insistence.

The victim did not get pregnant.

Deputy Public Prosecutors James Chew and Grace Teo sought a jail term of 10 years and six strokes of the cane, stating, “A person’s home is their sanctuary. A woman has a sacrosanct right to her bodily integrity. This case involves a flagrant and deplorable breach of both these inviolable principles. It involves an accused who intruded into his ex-fiancee’s home and forcefully raped her to try and impregnate her.”

Rape carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine or caning.
