Yahoo Finance Manchester airport’s Terminal 2 reopens after reports of suspicious package
Manchester airport’s Terminal 2 has reopened after a police investigation found “no security threat” following reports of a suspicious package.
The terminal was closed and passengers evacuated on Tuesday afternoon after Greater Manchester police set up a cordon to deal with the incident.
A Manchester airport spokesman said: “Following its investigation into a suspicious package reported in Terminal 2, Greater Manchester police is satisfied that there is no security threat and has lifted the cordon that was in place.
“We thank passengers for their patience.”
The police sent a bomb disposal team to the airport as part of its investigation and spokesperson said enquiries are ongoing.
Scott Green, the assistant chief constable at GMP, added: “Thankfully, on examination, the package was assessed and it was confirmed as not being a viable device.”
In an earlier statement, the airport said police were “assessing reports of a suspicious package” at the terminal and all flights were diverted to Terminal 1.
In a previous statement, the airport said a “controlled evacuation” was taking place, adding: “We are in close contact with Greater Manchester police, who are managing the response, and will provide an update on the situation as soon as possible.”
The airport also confirmed flights due to operate in and out of Terminal 2 were likely to be diverted to Terminal 1.
Police blocked all approaches to the terminal as part of the evacuation.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester police said earlier today: “Police were called with a report of a suspicious package in Terminal 2 of Manchester airport at about 3.20pm today.
“The terminal has been evacuated as per standard procedure and a cordon has been put in place as a safety precaution while an assessment is carried out.”
A passenger told the Manchester Evening News that his sister and her family were evacuated from the airport and had to moved to the other end of the terminal.
He added that airport staff were “calm” and said his family had been moved to the gate area, away from the shops and duty free.
The airport’s other terminals are located on the other side of the airport and continued to operate as usual during the incident.
