Marching band shows off ‘Hispanic roots’ by playing cumbia song at homecoming game for first time in years

A music teacher shared a musical milestone with pride, even if some students didn’t care.

Teacher and TikToker Francisco Gaxiola posted a special throwback for Hispanic Heritage Month. He and his high school students celebrated their “Hispanic roots” at homecoming. The marching band performed “Cumbia de la Cobra” by Fito Olivares Y Su Grupo.

Cumbia music is a form of Latin American music that evolved from colonialism. It blends African, Amerindian and European musical elements and is common in places like Mexico, Chile and Peru.

The bands performed the classic cumbia song with a few people watching. While the teacher lamented that “of course, the student section doesn’t care that the band is playing,” it was still a pretty big deal. They pulled off the new song after a mere two rehearsals.

“This is the first time they’ve played any Latin music in at least the past six years, with 70% of the student population being Hispanic/Latino,” the teacher explained.

“Love this, they did so well!” a person commented.

“It’s a tradition at my school after every won football game since the quarterback is in band he’ll come over real quick and play this on his sax,” a user said.

“My school was mostly Latine and Black but was always playing nothing that would get us hyped,” a user posted.

“I love this!!! I’m from south TX and my band director could never, we’ve been playing the same 5 songs for years!” another wrote.

“My HS band has played this song for years now! I’m glad another band is just as cool!” a TikToker said.
