Margot Robbie Thanks Moviegoers For ‘Barbie’ Golden Globe Win In New Cinematic And Box Office Achievement Category: “We Made It For You”

Barbie producer and star Margot Robbie offered a fittingly populist message in accepting the first-ever Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

“Thank you so much to the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans,” she said. “It’s a movie about Barbie, but it’s also a movie about humans. It’s about you. We made it for you, and we made it with love. Thank you for loving it back.”

Standing next to co-writer and director Greta Gerwig, Robbie added, “We would like to thank every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on Earth: the movie theater.” She thanked the “brave souls” at Warner Bros. and Mattel for “taking an extraordinary risk” “literally inventing numbers to justify green-lighting” the project and then “standing by it every step of the way.”

The introduction of the category this year has fascinated many inside and outside the industry, given the very public walk-back that the Oscars did when it was planning to add a similar category. The objective is to inject a shot of broad commercial appeal into the proceedings. In the case of the Oscars, the lack of Titanic-style dual threats winning statuettes and scoring at the box office has helped drag down TV ratings. The Globes, which don’t have the full complement of crafts categories of the Oscars and also recognize TV, have not been quite as starved for mainstream attractions, which caused raised eyebrows at the HFPA’s introduction of the category.

Gerwig thanked “all of the Barbies and the Kens in front of and behind the screen. It was the greatest, most joyful show of craftsmanship and passion I’ve ever seen.”

With more than $1.4 billion at the global box office, Barbie became the highest-grossing movie in Warner Bros. history and one-half of last summer’s out-of-left-field Barbenheimer phenomenon. Like Oppenheimer, it married strong support from critics with turnstile-spinning. That cannot be said for the rest of the field of Globe nominees, which included a few less-than-exalted titles. The full roster of nominees included Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Mark Hamill, forever known as Luke Skywalker in the franchise that helped create the modern blockbuster template, Star Wars, presented the award.
