A rare Georgian mansion in Marylebone that has hosted Prime Ministers from Pitt the Younger to Rishi Sunak has gone on the market today for £12.95 million.

The six bedroom house on Wimpole Street has served as a political salon in the 18th and 21st centuries with recent visitors including premiers Sunak, Liz Truss and Theresa May and other prominent Tory politicians such as Michael Gove, Jacob Rees-Mogg. It is being sold by agents Aston Chase and Dexters on behalf of the owner, former Westminster council Cabinet member and Lord Mayor of Westminster Jonathan Glanz and his family.

It was built in 1767 and from 1789 and 1814 house served as the London residence of Richard Howard, 4th Earl of Effingham, Private Secretary and Comptroller of the Household to Queen Charlotte, who were both portrayed in the Netflix TV series Bridgerton.

However by the late 20th century the house had lost its glamorous connections and was serving as the offices of a property with false ceiling and raised floors hiding the Georgian originals. The current owners bought the house in 1996 and began a two year restoration programme.r

Mark Pollack, of Aston Chase, said: “It is so rare to find a grand London residence in the heart of Marylebone with such architectural integrity. The beautiful Portland stone cantilevered staircase along with the exceptional principal entertaining rooms are more commonly associated with some of London’s grandest homes so it is understandable why this house has entertained Royalty, Prime Ministers and prominent politicians over the years.”
