We may be in the golden era of sneaker collabs — Here’s why

There are a few sneaker releases that, even before their official launches, will have the sneaker community standing in line, no matter what. One of the leading brands with this impact is the Adidas Yeezy lineup, with the Foam Runner MXTs in Moon Gray being the latest to shake the table.

The already massively popular kicks, which take the term “out of this world” to another level, are the topic of conversation in this week’s episode of Complex and In The Know’s The Flip. Host Racks Hogan breaks down just how these fare in the sneaker resale market.

“A name that we just can’t escape here at The Flip,” he says during the episode. “We’ve got the Yeezy Foam Runner MXT ‘Moon Gray.’ Now, let me tell you why this is a surefire thing: At a retail price of $80 — That’s right, 80 bucks — These shoes, I’ve seen the first interaction go for upwards of $700 in my size.”

Racks added that if you luck out and get this unique release at a price close to its initial retail value of $80, it’s definitely worth reselling since it’s such a high-demand launch.

“You’d almost be doing yourself a disservice not to go ahead and just take that free money that somebody wants to give you on the resale market,” he says. “I mean, the show is called The Flip. Go ahead and flip that shoe and make that money.”

With that said, let’s get into two more of this week’s hottest sneaker drops.

First hitting the sneaker market in January 2004 and now relaunched in late March 2021, the Nike Air Max 90 “Bacon” stands as one of the true OGs in the golden era of Nike collaborations. Grabbing inspiration from the legendary Lower East Side skate and sneaker shop Dave’s Quality Meat — yes, it’s literally inspired by bacon — this sneaker is both tongue-in-cheek, and fashion rolled into one.

For those who are unfamiliar, Dave Ortiz, a native New Yorker and graffiti artist opened up Dave’s Quality Meat in 2003: a butcher shop-inspired concept store meant to cut through the hard edge associated with sneaker culture at the time.

This sneaker brings back one of the most iconic Air Max 90 colorways in the shoe’s history, proving that the Nike legacy is pretty much timeless.

Remaining one of the hottest and most high-demand Jordan 1 collabs since its May 2019 release, the Jordan 1 Retro High Travis Scotts proves that this silhouette will always be one of the most timeless in Nike’s arsenal.

Featuring a brown upper and white accents, plus a black Nike “Swoosh,” sail midsole, along with a brown sole, this understatedly sleek sneaker is a hot ticket item and will be for years to come. Retailing for $175 at its initial release and now going on the resale market for upwards of $1,400, this is one pair that’s only going to get better over time.
