Yahoo Finance McDonald's employee stuns TikTok with behind-the-scenes video: 'That's how you lose customers'
A McDonald’s employee revealed how the fast-food chain runs its drive-thru in a behind-the-scenes TikTok.
Katie Clarke generated over 5 million views on her video, revealing an average day working at a McDonald’s drive-thru.
“I get asked this all the time,” Clarke captioned her video.
According to Clarke, a common question she gets as a part-time McDonald’s employee is how the people working the drive-thru know which car ordered what.
“There is a camera and it takes a picture of you and your car,” Clarke says in her TikTok. “So maybe don’t pick your nose when you order … because we see it.”
Another comment from a fellow McDonald’s employee added, “I’ve literally watched people scream and hit their wheels [because] the coke machine broke.”
That’s the big secret: The camera takes a photo, which gets paired with your meal. That way, the worker at the next window knows what to bring out when your car pulls up.
But the TikTok also revealed something else several McDonald’s customers seemed to complain about.
“You guys don’t realize the reason we mess it up is because only the people taking orders and receiving payments … see the pictures,” someone pointed out.
Hopefully, that knowledge will help some users reflect on whether they’ve ever yelled at someone in the drive-thru. According to the TikTok, neither people who see the pictures actually end up making the orders.
Many commenters seemed mad about Clarke’s innocent joke — saying she could see customers pick their noses in the camera.
“Thanks for judging us,” one person commented. “That’s how you lose customers.”
In February 2020, a similar video went viral after a Starbucks employee filmed the process behind the coffee chain’s drive-thru.
“Apparently the drive-thru workers can see you when you order???? idk how to explain it but i feel violated,” one Twitter user said at the time.
