McDonald's To Serve Up 100% Organic Burger

McDonald's first 100% organic beef burger will go on sale next week for a limited time in Germany - one of its top European markets.

The fast-food chain announced it is tweaking its menus to include the McB burgers - made with organic beef sourced from organic farms in Germany and Austria.

The move comes as McDonald's revamps its food-sourcing practices to transform the firm into a "modern, progressive burger company".

Holger Beeck, chief executive of McDonald's Germany, said: "We have made a great effort to secure sufficient quantities of meat which satisfies the organic requirements and our own quality claims."

Sales at McDonald's have slumped, in part due to competition from newer chains.

But the company's quarterly sales at restaurants in Germany recently grew for the first time since the middle of 2012.

The McB will be available from 1 October to 18 November.

McDonald's declined to say whether the company would roll out the burger to other markets.

In March, McDonald's announced that within two years it would stop buying meat from chickens raised with antibiotics.

The move was welcomed by health and consumer groups concerned about the overuse of antibiotics in meat production.
