What Is the Median Household Income for a Family in Every State
Compare median household incomes for families by state, and you’ll find some very large discrepancies, so says the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
The survey sliced its data a couple of different ways for 2022 – the most recent year for which data is available. “Married couple families” referred to spouses who are listed as members of the same household, regardless of whether they have children living with them. The term “families” alone was used to describe a householder and one or more people related to that householder by birth, marriage or adoption who live in the same household.

Sixteen states and the District of Columbia showed median income for families at $100,000 or more, while nine states came in below $80,000. Numbers for married couple families were consistently higher. For that definition of “family,” all but 11 states cracked the $100,000 mark.
The six places with the highest median incomes are located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S.
Across all categories (not just families), the Census Bureau reported that the median income for 2022 in the U.S. was $74,580. That was 2.3% lower than the 2021 figure. The study went on to say that householders under the age of 65 bore the brunt of that decline, with those age 65 and up not significantly affected.
