The Meg 2 director Ben Wheatley has teased the possibility of multiple sharks terrorising the waters.

Known for mixing low-budget fare (Kill List, In the Earth) with starry dramas (Rebecca) and shoot-em-ups (Free Fire), Wheatley is currently in pre-production on the sequel (subtitled The Trench) to 2018's monster movie The Meg.

Catching up with Den of Geek, he offered some insight on what fans can expect.

"I'm storyboarding at the moment," revealed the filmmaker. "It's been going on for four months, five months. It's my happy place, I love storyboarding. So yeah, I'm cutting storyboards and watching animatics, and slowly constructing the movie.

"It's really exciting. It's just action on a massive, massive scale."

As for which characters could be returning, Wheatley went on to share: "I don't think I can say at the moment what's going on, the ins and outs of it. But guaranteed, there will be a megalodon – maybe more than one."
