Meghan Markle bakes cake with lemons from her garden for volunteers during Women's History Month

Meghan Markle sent a cake baked with lemons grown in her Californian garden to be part of meals given out during Women's History Month.

Prince Harry and Meghan's non-profit organisation, Archewell, has partnered with World Central Kitchen (WCK), a charity which helps provide food for people in the wake of disaster and those facing food poverty.

Archewell and WCK worked together in Chicago, Illinois, "to provide meals and share a message of appreciation and support" for Women's History Month.

Sharing a photo on Twitter, WCK explained the dessert had been a lemon and olive oil cake baked by Meghan.

WCK also said: "Since WCK’s Covid response began in Chicago, we’ve served nearly 500,000 meals. Today, Dorri of the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago—which has distributed 60,000 meals with WCK—and Sarah, co-owner of Fat Shallot restaurant, shared a safely distanced lunch with women picking up meals."

The Fat Shallot team confirmed the cake was "delicious".

Thanking Meghan and Archewell, the restaurant's Instagram account added: "It’s not everyday you get a beautiful note and lemon cake made for you by a Duchess."

Meghan's love of food and cooking was well documented through her website, The Tig, before she closed it when she was set to marry Harry and become a senior royal.

She even baked a loaf of banana bread when on royal tour with Harry in Australia in 2018, taking the cake on a visit to a local farming family, the Woodleys, in Dubbo, New South Wales.

The Duchess cooked the treat the night before in the kitchen at Admiralty House (the Sydney home of the Governor-General of Australia) where the couple stayed during their trip.

It was later revealed that her recipe included chocolate chips and ginger.

But it seems her love of lemons trumped the banana loaf on this occasion. 

Lemon and elderflower was also the couple's choice for their wedding cake, which was baked by Claire Ptak.

WCK was one of the first charity partners announced by Archewell, Harry and Meghan's non-profit, and they funded the building of a relief centre in Dominica, which has been badly hit by hurricanes in the last few years.

There will be three other centres built as part of the partnership. WCK is run by Chef Jose Andres.

In a statement released in December 2020, Harry and Meghan said: “The health of our communities depends on our ability to connect to our shared humanity.

“When we think about Chef Andrés and his incredible team at World Central Kitchen, we're reminded that even during a year of unimaginable hardship, there are so many amazing people willing – and working tirelessly – to support each other. World Central Kitchen inspires us through compassion in action.”
