Meghan Markle and Prince Harry donated lunch to a group of military veteran volunteers working to help vulnerable people in Los Angeles in honour of Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Martin Luther King Jr. day, which took place on Monday, January 18 in the US, is a federal holiday that honours the life and work of the civil rights campaigner.

To pay tribute to the American Baptist minister and activist, the Sussexes gave a donation to volunteers working for The Mission Continues, a Los Angeles-based organisation helping veterans adjust to life after service through working in the community, a day prior.

The organisation confirmed the couple's donation in a detailed post on Twitter on January 17, writing: 'We'd like to send a huge thank you to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with Archewell Foundation, for fuelling the volunteers of our LA Service Platoon with lunch yesterday, so they can continue their hard work at the Compton VFW and help those living in the Compton community! We're truly honoured to have their support!'

The post also included several photos of veterans and volunteers, as well as a note written by the pair, who have made food accessibility a cornerstone of their joint endeavorers since stepping back from life as senior royals in March 2020.

On December 20, 2020 the couple announced that their foundation Archewell had chosen the food relief charity World Central Kitchen as its first partnership.

The World Central Kitchen has distributed around 50 million meals across 17 countries since it was founded by celebrity chef and restauranteur José Andrés during Haiti’s devastating earthquake in 2010. In 2018, Andrés was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The partnership with the charity will provide funding to construct four special Community Relief Centres around the world, with the first to be built on the Caribbean island of Dominica, and to open next year, reports The Telegraph.
