Meghan Markle releases behind-the-scenes video of her time guest editing Vogue

Meghan Markle has released a previously unseen video from her time guest editing British Vogue last year.

Filmed last August at the magazine’s London headquarters, the video posted to Sussex Royal Instagram gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Meghan working alongside editor-in-chief Edward Enninful.

The video was released to celebrate the news that the issue, entitled “Forces For Change,” was the fastest-selling in the history of British Vogue, with all issues sold out within 10 days.

“I can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store,” the accompanying caption begins, before going on to offer congratulations to all those who took part in the 2019 September issue, and thanks to those who supported and helped make it such a success.

The video shows Meghan and Mr Enninful looking back on how the project came about, via a text message the previous January, with the pair originally meeting with a view to Enninful helping with Smart Works.

“I remember walking into Kensington Palace and I was so excited,” the editor-in-chief says.

“And I was like ‘Lovely to meet you, Duchess.’ And you were like ‘Call me Meghan.’”

Meghan goes on to reveal that she herself pitched the idea of guest-editing to Enninful, who confirmed that she's the first person in the history of British Vogue to do so.

“You have an editor’s eye,” Enninful enthuses. “I’ve never seen anything like it. You were so thorough, from beginning to end.”

But Meghan says she couldn’t take the credit for the fashion within the issue, pointing out that she left “the fashion stuff” to the experts.

For Meghan the priority was making sure that “anyone, no matter who they are, picking up this issue, should be able to see themself in it. That’s what I feel really proud that we’ve accomplished.”

“You wanted to focus on women who are changing the world, women who are doing incredible things. Which really is in line with what we do at British Vogue.”

At that point, she reveals she has a “surprise” for the editor, to celebrate the success of the issue.

She then offers him a bright red glitter party hat before placing a silver mini top hat with veil on her own head.

The final part of the video sees Enninful and call a number of people who were involved in the issue, including Laverne Cox, British fashion model Adwoa Aboah, Laverne Cox and model Adut Akech.

“Just know, we are so, so proud that you’re on the cover with everything you represent … you’re a true force for change,” Meghan tells Akech.

The final call is to actress and activist Jane Fonda, who says: “Meghan, I’m so proud of you for using your amazing platform and your strong voice and I’m so honoured to be a part of it with all those other amazing women.

“Thank you so much for including me.”

The video release comes as Enniful claimed last month that the conversations the ‘Forces for change’ issue created sparked a “movement not a moment”.

Writing in the latest edition of Vogue about his collaboration with the Duchess of Sussex, 38, he described the response as “phenomenal”.

The issue, which went on sale on August 2nd, famously featured the portraits of 15 women the royal most admired on its cover - including Adwoa Aboah, Jameela Jamil and Greta Thunberg.

The editor-in-chief went on to announce that Meghan’s ‘Forces For Change’ idea would be continued in every issue going forward: “The people it championed, made it clear that this was not simply a moment, but a movement.

“For that reason, as we enter a new decade, we wish to continue that story.”
