Meredith Marks made her mark on the Bravo universe on the first season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City — pun intended.

Between her scene-stealing fashion statements and introducing a new catch phrase to the Housewives lexicon with “I’m disengaging,” the Meredith Marks Collection founder easily became a fan favorite in a cast chock full of them.

For the latest episode of In The Know’s pop culture interview series We Should Talk, Meredith Marks answered all of our burning questions about the first season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, including her separation taking center stage, the reaction to her son, Brooks, where she stands with the rest of the women and the unlikely origin of the season’s breakout one-liner.

“I don’t think I realized the magnitude of what I was jumping into. I’m not a huge television person to begin with, so I had barely ever watched Housewives. In fact, I had never watched it prior to when finding out that that was what I was doing,” Marks told ITK. “At some level, I didn’t quite know what I was jumping into — which was probably good, to be honest — or I would’ve been in a full-on panic. It took some time to get comfortable talking about [everything], and I think you see that.”

Meredith Marks on filming starting during her separation from her husband: “Seth and I had been separated on and off for years, and it was something that nobody knew, other than he and I. But this was the first time that we were very publicly separated and the first time where we had totally disconnected communication and were living in separate homes. It made sense, the way it came across, because it was a different separation than our previous separations. It was a very different experience, and I don’t know that that whole history and backstory really could’ve been explained properly, so it was like you’re jumping in.”

Meredith Marks on being done with her first season: “Honestly, it’s a huge relief to move past season one and move on. There are certain things like ‘hospital smell’ that I never need to hear again. We’ve been talking about this for a long time, and it’s okay if I don’t talk about it ever again. [Laughs] That’s just fine. It’s nice, because there is resolution on a lot of things, but things not being resolved is just life. It’s like beating a dead horse, though, at this point.”

Meredith Marks on her infamous Christian Cowan mask: “To me, fashion parallels life, and it’s a way to express yourself. At that point in time, I was really disengaged, and I was guarded and I wanted my protection. It worked. The crystal mesh ties back to jewelry, which is, of course, my thing. It was representative of my state of mind at the time. […] Fashion is about expressing yourself however you choose to do so. The people that appreciate it, great, those who don’t, that’s fine, too. Say what you want to say, it won’t hurt my feelings. It’s something I’m wearing, it’s not the core of my being.”

Meredith Marks on not watching Real Housewives before doing the show: “I don’t think I realized the magnitude of what I was jumping into. I’m not a huge television person to begin with, so I had barely ever watched Housewives. In fact, I had never watched it prior to when finding out that that was what I was doing, and then I went and watched an episode from every franchise, which was definitely not the right approach at all. I should’ve watched a full season. You live and you learn. At some level, I didn’t quite know what I was jumping into — which was probably good, to be honest — or I would’ve been in a full-on panic. It took some time to get comfortable talking about [everything], and I think you see that.”
