Mesut Ozil close to agreeing Arsenal exit with star set to terminate contract this month

Mesut Ozil is close to finalising an agreement to leave Arsenal as a free agent this month.

The German superstar has been out of favour under Mikel Arteta since the coronavirus restart last season and was not even named in the Gunners’ Premier League or European squads for the current campaign.

The 32-year-old is due to be out of contract at the end of the season, but Standard Sport understands his exit has been agreed in principle and is now close to being finalised so he can terminate his £350,000-a-week deal early.

That would allow the World Cup winner to quit Emirates Stadium this month and find a new club.

MLS side DC United and Turkish club Fenerbahce have both shown the strongest interest and are keen to sign Ozil.

Fenerbahce, however, are thought to be at the front of the queue and are the favourites to sign the attacking midfielder.

Ozil has made no secret of his love for the club, who he supported as a child, and a move there is attractive to him.

“I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany,” wrote Ozil on Twitter during a Q and A on Monday evening.

“Every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany. And mine was Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.”

Ozil and his agent, Erkut Sogut, have previously been adamant the German would not terminate his contract early.

They have stated he is committed to Arsenal and determined to win his place back after falling out of favour under Arteta.

Ozil, however, is now close to leaving the club and a move to Fenerbahce seems his most likely destination.
