It would be extremely New York Mets for the best moment of a new decade to be a news conference, but for now it’s true. There is apparently plenty of reason to believe that will change in the near future.

New Mets owner Steve Cohen was officially introduced on Tuesday, and said a lot of things. Now the richest team owner in MLB, Cohen said he wasn’t in this to make money, he just wants to win. He said the team would spend. He praised the fans. Most importantly, he said he would be disappointed if the Mets didn’t win a World Series in the next three to five years.

For a fan base that has endured the Wilpon family for decades, an era of depressed payrolls, perplexing decisions, nepotistic hires, incessant micro-managing, scandal, bizarre incidents, more mentions of Bernie Madoff than you’d like, an annual exercise in fiscal humiliation, hostile infighting and a fan culture primarily defined by exhaustion, Tuesday was more than just a news conference to Mets fans.

It marked the beginning of a new era, a possibility of becoming the kind of titan that baseball teams in the New York market should be.

Cohen’s words could very well end up being hollow, but for now, they’re the roadmap upon which Mets fans are basing their expectations and trace directly toward a future that previously felt impossible under the Wilpons.

As that catharsis hit, Mets fans made no effort to hide their excitement about their new favorite billionaire.

Observers also got a kick out of watching Mets fans fall over themselves as Cohen said groundbreaking things like “Winning is good” and “I will spend money to make this team better.”
