MFA providing consular support to 2 Singaporeans convicted for drug trafficking in China

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has been providing consular support to two Singaporeans who were convicted for drug trafficking in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, one of whom is facing the death sentence.

In response to media queries on the case involving Siti Aslinda, 35, and Mohd Yusri, 44, an MFA spokesperson said the Singapore Consulate-General in Guangzhou has been rendering consular assistance to the two Singaporeans since 2015. The assistance includes visiting them regularly until the COVID-19 outbreak this year and ensuring that they have access to necessary medical attention and appropriate legal assistance.

“MFA has also been in contact with their families to provide consular support, including as recent as this week.”

The ministry did not specify the nature of the Singaporeans’ offences nor the sentences handed to them by a Chinese court.

In July, Aslinda and Yusri were convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death, almost five years after they were arrested in October 2015.

According to a report by CNN, Yusri's sentence was suspended for two years and it may be downgraded to life imprisonment.

Aslinda was deemed to have played a bigger role in the offence. She faces execution if she fails in her final appeal against the sentence.

The duo were stopped by Shenzhen customs officials for a search on 24 October 2015, according to court documents seen by CNN. Their suitcases were found to contain 28 women's handbags with more than 11kg of methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”, hidden inside.

Aslinda and Yusri had denied any knowledge of the drugs.
