UK government confirms you can travel quarantine-free to 59 countries

From Cosmopolitan

  • The UK government has released a list of countries that Brits will be able to travel to quarantine free, meaning you won't have to isolate for two weeks on your return.

Considering there was a period of time when we were locked down at home, and there were much bigger things on our mind, the idea of a holiday has felt pretty alien this year.

The coronavirus pandemic meant international travel was put on hold, flights were off the cards, and for safety and wellbeing reasons, we all stayed inside as much as possible.

But as restrictions on socialising in the UK start to ease, so too does the prospect of going abroad. What with the Foreign Office changing their travel advice, and talk of holiday destinations opening up their boarders, the idea of getting away feels closer than ever before.

Helped, in part, by the UK government confirming quarantine-free travel is now on the cards. In a new report published today [3 July], gov.uk explained:

"Passengers returning or visiting from certain destinations which pose a reduced risk to the public health of UK citizens, including Spain and Italy, will no longer need to self-isolate when arriving in England, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps will set out today."

The new measures will come into force from 10 July 2020, meaning you won't need to quarantine for two weeks on your return, from 59 countries. The government’s expectation is that a number of the exempted countries will also not require arrivals from the UK to self-isolate.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the idea of 'air bridges' between countries will be scrapped by the government, in favour of a list of places where Brits can travel freely - which will be released later.

It's thought a traffic light system will decide which nations are safe to travel to, with those classed as green or amber available to holidaymakers, meaning you will not have to self-isolate for 14 days when they get back.
