Mikel Arteta has hailed his Arsenal side for fighting their way to victory against Burnley.

The Gunners ground out a 1-0 win at Turf Moor, with Martin Odegaard scoring the only goal of the game with a superb a free-kick in the first-half.

Arsenal then had to weather the storm after that and they managed to hold on thanks to a strong defensive effort.

The likes of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and centre-back Gabriel shone, and afterwards Arteta praised his team for battling to a win.

“[It was a] really hard-fought victory at a place that is really tough to come and win,” he said.

“We started the game really well, we had some big phases where I saw a lot of things that we want as a team. We scored the goal, had some opening chances, but the moment we lost control.

“We started to give balls away after the first, second, third pass. Obviously, the game then becomes open, there is no control.

“Then you have to defend crosses and long balls and I thought we did that really, really well.

“We have players that do not have the best qualities to play that game, but I thought they did terrifically well.

“I think their commitment and the attitude that they showed throughout the game to win and find a way to win was the most pleasing thing for me.

“It builds confidence, trust and a belief that you can go through difficult moments in matches and still win.”

Speaking specifically about Gabriel and Takehiro Tomiyasu, Arteta said: “Both of them were terrific.

“I think the back-four in general defensively was really, really solid.

“We didn’t concede much even though they put us under pressure. I think they were really good.”
