New milestone for ContextVision/HES-SO: Presents demo of a new search tool for digital pathology

STOCKHOLM - November 30, 2017 - ContextVision, a medical technology company specializing in image analysis and artificial intelligence, and its research partner HES-SO, Information Systems Institute University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland, Sierre, presents the first results from the content-based search tool for pathology. The search tool is one of the products generated from the collaborative research program SL-DESUTO, sponsored by Eurostars and initiated in 2015.

"Reaching this milestone is a great step for ContextVision and gives us comfort that we, based on this, will be able to develop a unique tool with great value to pathologists", says Anita Tollstadius, CEO, ContextVision.

Evaluating pathological images can be very demanding and the rare or atypical cases are particularly challenging. These cases require extra attention and pathologists currently spend a lot of their time understanding and correctly diagnosing cases they have never seen before. Reference cases are of great value in such situations, therefore colleagues and educational books are consulted in order to look for the most likely diagnosis.

"This new tool is designed to help pathologists browse, search and retrieve images from large databases of digital images to identify similar cases and thereby facilitate and shorten the diagnostic process. It is the possibility to use both images and text for the search that makes this tool particularly valuable," said Tollstadius.

The demo is presented by Dr. Manfredo Atzori during the Digital Pathology Congress (DPC) from Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in London, with over 400 participants from Europe and the U.S. Atzori is a Senior Researcher at the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland, Information Systems Institute, Sierre.

"Thanks to scientific literature and publicly-available resources of whole slide images, large amounts of histopathology data are available in the internet. This opens the possibility to develop image analysis and retrieval systems to support pathologists during their clinical routine," Atzori said.

There is a lack of pathologists and the number of patient cases to evaluate continues to increase. Pathologists are therefore faced with an increasing challenge as their workload rapidly increase. An efficient workflow is vital but unusual cases are very time consuming.

"It is our intention to develop a set of products to help pathologists save time and we intend to develop this concept further to bring a product to market," said Tollstadius.

This project has received funding from the Eurostars-2 Joint Program with co-funding from the European Union`s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
