Millie Bobby Brown fires back at critics of her accent: 'I'm trying my best'

"I come to set and I'm an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic other people!" the "Stranger Things" star said.

Millie Bobby Brown has had enough of people who criticize her accent.

The Stranger Things actress, who grew up in both England and the United States, had some choice words for those who mock her occasionally inconsistent manner of speaking. "I'm an actor," Brown said in an interview with internet personality Max Balegde. "I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come to set and I'm an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic other people!"

Brown, 20, went on to explain how the voices of others — including her husband-to-be, Jon Bon Jovi's son Jake Bongiovi — can impact her own speech patterns. "I can't help that when I'm around my fiancé, or when I'm with people like Jimmy Fallon who have a very American accent, I wanna replicate it!" she said. "And now I'm in England, I wanna replicate that [accent]! I don't do it intentional, and I'm sorry if it offends you, okay? But listen, I'm trying my best! I'm trying my best."

Brown's signature performance — as the telekinetic heroine Eleven on Stranger Things — sees her utilize a pretty flawless American accent, as does her role in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and its sequel Godzilla vs. Kong. She's fully (and convincingly) English in projects like the Enola Holmes movies and the new fantasy film Damsel.

Brown will next star in The Electric State, from Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo. It remains to be seen whether she'll adopt an English or American accent to play the protagonist of the Netflix movie, though the source graphic novel is set in the United States.
